Of all the genres I read, I am most completely taken in by a family story of dysfunction.

MOTHER, MOTHER by Koren Zailckas fits the bill. One drug addict, one pregnant teen, one homeschooled because of autism/epilepsy, an alcoholic father, and the Mother of the title. Off we go to sort out the roots of their problems.

Zailckas uses alternating chapters to catch the experiences of Violet, a teen drug addict, and those of Will, the good kid at home, because of his many unique learning challenges. The third child, Rose, has disappeared.

As the story progresses, the reader becomes more and more aware of the posturing narcissism of the mother, Josephine. Josephine has no conscious. Josephine has no empathy. She is a psychopathic personality with a desire only to preserve her reputation in the community, even at the expense of her children's happiness and well being.

The first three-fourths of the book begin building a case against Josephine. The last quarter fell a little flatter as the action stops. Things are roundly summarized. The sharp dialogue disappears as time passes in chunks of years.

This book is a little bit of GONE GIRL mixed with a MEAN MOTHER (non-fiction title). I liked it; I didn't love it. I would have preferred a more active ending. That said, I checked my Kindle and found I had highlighted seven passages of acute observation. Zailckas captures the atmosphere of strain and panic when the family is at risk.

a truly excellent story of dysfunction, healing and hope. While I bought this book because I was seeking a good mystery, I fell in love with it due to its wise and moving insights into the human psyche. The characters have great depth, the plot is intriguing...a really great read for anyone who is interested in the darker side of humanity and the promise of deliverance.
I didn't expect this to be a story about relationships. In fact, I really thought this was a horror story. I had just seen the movie, "Mama." Go figure. So, as someone who doesn't really like novels about relationships, I was surprised at how much I liked this story. I'm sure 98 percent of us can be truly thankful for mothers who are not Josephine. As for the rest of the characters, you will just have to read it for yourself.
This story has stayed in my mind for weeks. It builds to a chilling ending. The main characters become in the end not who they seemed to be throughout the story. It could be an interesting character study for a book group. It certainly held my attention to the end and I did not guess how it would end...something I usually can do with most stories. This is a well written interesting book.
Fantastic detail of a scary mommy. Equal parts narcissism and munchausen by proxy. you can see the coming train wreck but are helpless to avoid it. I'm fascinated by the way the authors mind works I will read more of her stories!
You have to read this book and go through your own journey with it. I can't do it for you. Some books (the good ones anyway) can't be defined by the words of someone else. When I was a child, sometimes, but only sometimes I could fall so deep into a book that the book became my reality for days afterward. I don't know if that is good or bad but it happens to adults as well as children. I dropped off the face of the earth for an hour and I'm still not back yet.
This offers a rare portrait of narcissistic family dynamics in a novel—a genre that allows for much more realized characters than accounts in the many self-help and therapeutic books out there on the subject. Accurate and very engaging. Not great literature, but a solidly good read that offers insight into a deeply destructive reality, particularly from the point of view of kids raised by narcissist parents. If you are interested in the pathology of narcissism and/or have suffered at the hands of narc parents, this is a must read. Thank you Koren Zailckas for this book.
I loved this book! I was definitely cheering for Violet. In a sense I felt for her, because I remember my teenage years. It's a very tough part of growing up, especially when you feel like your mother isn't quite there for you. The one person you should be able to always count on, and you can't. As far as Will goes, I feel bad for him, I think he's going to struggle with a lot of things through out his life. Mostly socially because of how Josephine shaped him.
Douglas never seemed to have meant any harm. I think he was so used to Josephine controlling everything, that he just went with it and lost sight of the most important things; his kids.
Josephine, I'll just say that she didn't get nearly what she deserved. She is a sad, sad, human being.
Every mother, father and teenager should probably read this!
