Learning about the world through literature is why many of us read. As a child, I learned about far away places and times through book after book. Rivka’s Way is a book I would have read so many times it fell apart. I would have read to learn about a way of life so different, and yet so restrictive. Teri Kanefield writes of an orthodox Jewish girl, age 15, in Prague’s Jewish quarter, a girl who only wants to see the outside world. A world of sights she can only image stands just beyond the walls that enclose her home. A bit further on are mountains, hills, trees, and . . . . Come journey with Rivka as she learns about a world so close and yet so distant from her own. You won’t regret buying or reading Rivka’s Way. C.M. Rivka Way edition by Teri Kanefield Children eBooks Reviews
A timeless story of a girl who sets out on an adventure, learns about the world, and comes home to understand herself, her family, and her community in new ways. It was refreshing to read about Jewish history from a unique perspective and a period not often presented in fiction.
Rivka is a good, obedient Jewish girl who lives within the walls of the Jewish ghetto in 18th century Prague. The physical walls of the ghetto and deep cultural traditions that define her life give her a great sense of security but also fuel her yearning for adventure, which is made even more urgent by her imminent arranged marriage. Once Rivka embarks on her adventures, it’s hard to put this book down.
My kids (ages 9 & 11) and I enjoyed this book as a read aloud. We were familiar with the lives of the Jews in the World War 2 era, but we didn't know anything about their lives in the 1700 & 1800's. Interesting and educational.
A lovely but suspenseful story about the importance of community and the ties we have to one another. A simple plot Rivka longs to see the world outside the walled ghetto. She ventures outside, and when she does, she finds the world isn't quite what she expected. The reader wonders what will happen when she gets caught (as she inevitably will). Suspense, friendship, love-- and a satisfying ending.
I sure did enjoy this sweet and courageous Jew girl's life story.
So, I would really wish to recommend this for five stars and especially for girls ages 7-12. I received this ebook for free and in return, here now is my honest review. Super job Teri!

Rivka's Way is an adolescent novel. The sentimental tone fits the story of Rivka, an intellectually curious and headstrong teen, as she explores romance with someone of a different ethnic group at a time when the cultures within Prague were strictly delineated. The conflicts within her own family are handled realistically. She grows as a character, and is able to go on to the next stage in life because of her experiences. Reading the novel is a good way to get the sense of Prague in an earlier century.
If you are looking for cliff-hangers, nail-biting action, or the sort of violent stories often popular, this one isn't for you. This is a lovely story about a curious girl who sets out on an adventure and comes to understand her community and the larger world beyond. So often historical novels try to show heroic girls but succeed in creating a completely unrealistic characters completely overstepping what a girl living then might do. Rivka is curious and adventurous, but completely believable.
