For an Iowa farm girl in 1913, Liddie Treadway has big dreams. She yearns to move to town, learn a trade, and live on her own. With encouragement from career-minded Aunt Kate, her goals seem within reach—until her unmarried sister is sent away for becoming pregnant and her father dies in a tragic accident. Now the family needs Liddie more than ever, and she’s certain she’ll be trapped on the farm for good.
The Treadways’ hired man, Joe Bauer, has dreams of his own to marry and settle down. So when a woman he’s been courting breaks his heart, he leaves Iowa to start over, just as Liddie finally gets her chance to take a seamstress apprenticeship in town…
Though they’re separated by miles, Liddie’s friendship with Joe grows as they write to each other about their new lives. But when Joe returns, will Liddie have to choose between worldly independence and the conventional path of love and family? Or can she have it all?

This is a beautifully written book. It was an unexpected surprise, as I had Carol's other book recommended to me by BookBub. I couldn't put it down. I usually am strictly a non-fiction reader. I was engrossed in her characters and loved the tone, the setting and the vibe of the read. It was just so thoughtful and beautiful. Since I had read her book about growing up in Iowa, I saw where she drew a lot from that into her characters in this book. What a treasure. Enjoy it!Product details

Go Away Home edition by Carol Bodensteiner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was a nice story but the ending was a bit too drawn out. I liked the historical aspect but by the end I found myself skimming through the pages just to get to the end, which didn't leave me feeling good about it. It's an easy-to-read, easy-to-put-down story.
I bought this book because of the good reviews and because I like books written during that time period. I am obviously in the minority but I didn't care for the book. I thought it was weak and shallow, and very predictable. I thought the protagonist, Liddie, was a silly, self centered girl and I really didn't care for most of the other characters. The only reason I gave it two stars is because I have read worse books. Sorry, I really wanted to like the book.
"Go Away Home" .....definitely 5-stars
"Go Away Home" by Carol Bodensteiner was a delightfully wonderful story that easily rates five stars. Carol Bodensteiner is a great storyteller, and had me interested from the beginning all the way through the novel. Like many entertaining stories, I did not want the story to end.
I mostly read for entertainment, but the story also had a good overview of life in the early 1900s American mid-west. Born and raised on a farm myself, I was already interested in that part of the story. But at the same time, the history of early America has always been of interest. Yet with all of that, the story was not a plain, boring history nor a methodology of farming. It was a delightful tale of Americans living and loving and growing up in early mid-western communities.
But let me not steer you away from the book if you're not interested in those subjects. If you enjoy a great story about families and friends and communities, read this novel. If you like stories about families that love and live, you'll love this novel ...I guarantee it.

I picked up Go Away Home because I wanted a break from mysteries. I also enjoy historical fiction, but had not read one about life in the Midwest in the early 1900's. I found myself caught up in the lives of the characters, wanting to learn how their lives turned out. The book makes the reader appreciate the difficulties of farm life, especially before electricity. It also raises an awareness about America's response to WWI. The author does not tie the story up with a thoroughly happy ending, but rather a reasonably realistic conclusion that forces you to ponder what's important in life. Sometimes, it's just taking it one day at a time.
“Go Away Home” by Carol Bodensteiner reminds me of the old adage “You can take the girl off the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the girl.” This book is written about a farm girl in Iowa in 1913 when the United States was on the cusp of entering the First World War.
Liddie can’t wait to leave the farm and travel to see new sights and find new opportunities. She is ready to go to town and become a seamstress which she thinks will open many doors for her future. In spite of some serious events occurring within her family, she gets the opportunity she’s been looking for and beyond. She meets a photographer and learns about his trade. He wants her to go to Paris with him to take pictures of the war as his bride, although reading between the lines he just wants an assistant. During her stay in town, she has kept up a correspondence with a former hired hand from her family’s farm, who has gone to Canada to homestead. She needs to choose which life she would rather lead, that of a farm wife, or that of a world traveler. In the life she chooses, she finds that there is happiness, good times, bad times and times which are almost impossible to endure. In the end, the skills and character that she develops in growing up on a farm stand her in good stead for the rest of her life.
I thought that the author did a wonderful job of portraying farm life as it would have been in that time period. Life was hard, yet rewarding and the lessons learned during the growing-up years followed a person throughout life. I enjoyed reading this simple yet complex story of one girl’s journey to happiness.
This is a story about a young woman growing up in Iowa and the dreams she has for her future. Each of us is a product of our experiences and Liddie (short for Lydia) does not want her mother or older sister's life. As she makes her way through early adulthood her life takes many paths and winds in ways she never expected. She works hard, tries hard and makes her share of mistakes. The story is set just before WWI in a rural farm area and a nearby town. If you like to read for relaxation, you will enjoy this slice of life a hundred years ago in America's heartland.
I LOVED IT. As I was nearing the end, I slowed my reading because I knew I would be sad when it was over.
Many of the other reviewers have done a great job with the plot synopsis for Go Away Home -- so I’m not going to write about that.
Maybe because I am also an Iowa Farm Girl -- I really identified with Liddie. And -- HEY -- SHE LOVED TO SEW…so I felt a real sisterhood with her from the very first page.
The book was so well written -- I felt like I was visiting Maquoketa, Iowa during WW I and it was such an interesting time in our history. Ms. Bodensteiner brought so many things into the crossroad of that time and place -- commercial photography, automobiles, a World War, the Influenza epidemic.
I enjoyed the historical accuracy and the author’s attention to detail. But mostly, I loved her characters…and I am hoping for a sequel.
The women in ;my book club are all reading the book now -- and I think we'll have some good discussions.
