The Boy and What Might Have Been eBook Russell Newell

This was my first read by this author. I could not put this book down (and therefore read it today). The timing of events was perfectly sequenced, as I was catching up with one part of the story and needed to know what was happening with the other characters, it was in the next chapter...I was too engaged to pause. It was disturbing, upsetting and timely as it is a subject that is nightmarish but so well laid out, that the insight into another persons nightmare was probably why it was so gripping. I like a story where the characters can fall apart and then put their lives back together again, grow & change. I also like a story where the good in people prevails. It was like getting hooked on House of Cards and watching 3 episodes in a night... I don't remember the last time I picked up a book and read it straight through except when I am on vacation!

The Boy and What Might Have Been eBook Russell Newell Reviews

Best thriller I have read in a long time. I highly recommend Boy and the Bastard. The raw emotion in this book came through time and time again. The complexity of the main character Gus filled me with emotions from hate, to empathy, to compassion. Just when you thought it could not get any more uncomfortable, any more tense, Newell would turn the screws even tighter. There are numerous examples of this tension, but I do not wish to ruin the surprise for any new readers. I have never read a book with more highs and lows. Like most of the reviews posted on this book, I too could not put it down, finishing it in 2 nights. I look forward to the next book from Newell.
I'm going right to bed now as its almost midnight, but I just had to tell you just how good this book is.
One of the best books I've read. Literally just finished reading the last 3 hours straight after putting the kids to bed. I won't spoil it, but Fabulous ending. I was so happy with the last scene.
The beginning couple chapters were tough for me to get into as I knew the boy was going to get kidnapped & I was not looking forward to that part of the book...but the whole life within the cult and his relationships with the people within & especially Francis was great stuff. The low point of Gus was tough to not feel horrible for him. I was hoping for a great reuniting but had my doubts as the book was drawing to and end and fewer and fewer pages. This did not disappoint. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Fantastic job Mr. Newell!
I don't know how to rate this disturbing story. There will be many who will score it one star; many others as 5 stars. A huge part of the novel could be a textbook detailing how to brainwash an impressionable 7-year old boy. The protagonist's father, an unbelievable a-hole (his word) suffers through torment for most of the story, but remains unrepentant at the end. I could not in good conscience recommend this novel to you--the author may once have suffered through some terrible experience in a religious cult, giving rise to this book as a kind of catharsis.
This book was well written and analytically nearly flawless. It kept me reading wanting to know what happens next, and for that, alone, this author should be applauded. This is not my normal genre, however, and I can't say I loved the story, but it was very well done.
I hate when this happens- I get so engrossed in a book when the story is really really good, I finish it way too soon. That's what happened with this most excellent book! The story- two stories, really- raced along at break neck speed, and there is no stopping at the end of a chapter- you just have to keep going to the very end, and then, when you do reach the end, you wish there was more. And there is more - you will be begging for a second, follow up book to know what happens after... Well, can't spoil the ending! Just read the book, you'll know what I mean!
Amazing book! The author Russell Newell, does a great job with his first novel, “The Boy and the Bastard” and pulls you in from page one! With alternating points of view, amazing use of tension and drama, strong three dimensional characters and beautiful use of descriptive words, this thriller will leave you on the edge of your seat, frantically turning pages asking yourself, “What happens next?” It’s a great father and son story where they become separated and we participate in their journeys through the depths of despair and discovery. One of the best aspects of this book is that the writing is so eloquently descriptive that you feel like you're watching the film version in your head while reading. Look forward to more from this author and I am sure this one will hit the big screens soon!
I admit it, I'm a critical reader. I believe most writers are. Pointing out a few areas that had me muttering to myself and family--Gus and Victoria are out of central casting, a couple of stereotypical semi-adults who fight endlessly while acting like fools. I know some divorced couples do this but please. It was too much. Gus's behavior toward the police makes no sense. His child's life is at stake and yet he keeps questioning and antagonizing them. Victoria has no depth and Gus only a little more. That's what I kept looking for, three dimensional people dealing with parents' worst nightmare. Instead we get anger and more anger.

As for my comment about the need for an editor, the characters endlessly repeat themselves and each other. Streamlining conversations would allow the story to flow.
