The first word to describe this book: unique.

It’s a sci-fi, for sure. Aliens abound. Good aliens, bad aliens, a war over a planet. But it’s a lot more focused on the characters, the intricacies of how people would react to aliens and an intergalactic war, and family. There’s a focus on mental health and psychology, through a therapist’s POV – as Heuwagen is one – that’s a REALLY neat mixture. It’s a sci-fi you snuggle up with and learn about people while you do it, if that makes any sense.

The writing is very good, and the plot is a slow build and dialogue heavy, which is all very lovely. The book is split into three points of view, in three segments. From this perspective you get to see all sides of this story – literally – and seeing the whole situation from the three lenses is really cool. Within this, Dawn Among the Stars feels like the powerful building of a great epic series to come; the foundations of something truly unique in the way sci-fi is handled.

I’m really looking forward to the next book! I need to know what’s happening next with Kayin and Melissa!!!! (I mean, sure, Henry too 😉)

I sincerely loved this book! It was so well written, and there was legitimate intrigue from page one. It was written from a unique perspective - incorporating issues of mental health, along with the concerns of galactic politics, romance, and forceful acculturation. There are three different and distinctive voices that tell the story of how the world falls prey to an oppressive species - and each one brings with it a glorious backdrop of personality.

I have read science fiction, horror, and fantasy my whole life - starting with classics like Bruce Coville's Aliens Ate my Homework, working my way through Stephen King's compendium, reading almost all the Star Trek and Star Wars lit I can find, Harry Potter (of course), and even reading slightly more obscure horror fantasy such as Brian Lumley's Necroscope drama. This book is so well written with an imaginative spin on the traditional science fiction lit that I would place it in my top 5 favorite books of all time. The way the author subtly incorporates feminism, mental health, and equality issues is truly inspiring and speaks toward a better future.

When a debut author bills themselves as a bestselling author on their blog, then they'd better deliver on that boast. Dawn Among the Stars does not deliver that for me.

The plot is common in Sci-fi Earth has become a casualty of war between two alien races and we follow three humans as they attempt to adjust to this new reality.

I stopped reading at 50% because I just couldn't get into it and Kayin and Henry, at least, are dislikeable characters. Kayin is rescued by the Shielders and promptly takes every opportunity to be rude and condescending to them. She does a lot of eye rolling and yelling orders when the Shielders are bending over backwards to ease her discomfort. As for the Shielders in this scenario, I just don't believe their actions. They accept her rudeness without question and treat her as a princess. When Henry encounters Shielders as he's attempting to get back to Michigan, he makes a point of being deferent in his greeting in order to not anger them, yet 2 pages later he's shouting at them without care for what they could do. This is a common theme in this book - characters do not react to situations as real people would, and it really pulled me out of the story.

The continuity errors and contradictions are also disrupting as a reader. At one point early on Kayin wakes up wearing a dress which is described in great detail, but a couple pages later she is nervously fingering her blazer. Where did the blazer come from? Kayin asserts early on that she felt more for Luke Skywalker than she felt for her ex, yet within a few pages Henry becomes the great love of her life. If Henry is the great love of her life, then what's going on with Naluba? She's got some heavy feelings for him based purely on a television appearance. The plot itself is a good idea, but the end product comes across as a bad B movie with forced acting and bad dialogue.
I love this book on so many levels. I read it in one day. I couldn’t put it down! First, it’s well written sci-fi and the words flow off the page. Samantha has created a story that is intricate yet not so complicated that you can’t understand. It was very believable in regards to how we would truly act if there was an alien invasion. Second, the characters are Latina, which was a refreshing change and often times misrepresented. That was not the case in this book! And finally I love the fact that the author addresses mental illness in a genre where that seems to be missing. She has done an excellent job of creating healthy relationships and was accurate in her portrayal of what it’s like to deal with chronic anxiety. And then there’s Aliens! I can’t wait for the next book in this series!!
I absolutely agree with the reviewer who called Dawn Among the Stars unique. This book is not your average sci-fi novel--it's not heavy on the science. In fact, there isn't much science at all. This is a book about an alien invasion on earth in which two different alien races are fighting for the planet. One is fighting to save the planet for the humans and the other is fighting to have the planet for themselves. There are three parts to this story, each told from a different human point of view, and each showing interactions with the aliens. This story is, at its core, about how the human characters respond and react to the trauma and destruction the aliens bring. It's an examination of emotions, mostly told through dialog. And I particularly appreciated the backstory woven throughout wherein you learn how the aliens came to find earth, for how long they've been visiting, and who's to blame for the invasion. If you're searching for an emotional read that asks the question, What would we do if aliens invaded tomorrow? then this is the perfect book for you. Of course the elements of alien romance are pretty awesome too. )
