As an Australian historical fiction writer, Peter Yeldham compares more than favourably with the more celebrated Bryce Courtenay. Meticulous research, great characterisations, well devised plots and interesting writing style mark all of Yeldham's books. "Against the Tide" is no exception. This is the story of three refugees from the horrors of WWii who arrived in Australia to find a better life and an Englishman who broke the rules trying to help them. What they experience in Australia shatters their dreams. Like numerous other migrants of the 1950s, what they found themselves up against was discrimination, hostility, corruption and bigotry. Much of this took place at the construction works of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. So many accounts of the building of this great feat of engineering concentrate on the greatness of the design and construction itself and the brilliance of those who conceived it. What is frequently overlooked is the exploitation of the many migrants who were required by the government to work for two years on whatever project they were assigned to, including the Snowy Mountain works. All Australians should be aware of this not very flattering piece of post WWII Australian history. Australian culture owes so much to these European migrants who were basically allowed to migrate here not out of compassion but because we desperately needed their their labour. I thoroughly recommend this book as an exposition of a piece of lesser known Australian history and a damn good read.

Excellent didn't want it to end.
A very truthful narration of how life was for migrants in Australia in the 50s. All Australians should read this book.
This moves along pleasantly and is easy to pick up or put down. The characters are drawn well and the story will probably resonate with immigrants to our country.
Clearly a story of appeal to generational Australians and many of its post war migrants, which seems to be a common denominator of other Peter Yeldham stories. It's a story that interweaves a great fiction and a real setting of great significance in Australia's history. The quality of the writing and the story's plot, however, should please any reader who likes cleverly written and fast moving novels set in an interesting, historic setting.
I haven't read anything by Peter Yeldham before and I found this interesting and very compelling - could hardly put it down in other words! I'll definitely be reading more of his books. I read he has written several mini-television series and remembered that I enjoyed those as well.
