The world is in some ways standard UF, with most humans totally clueless about the supernatural, but having the primary supernatural race of interest be demons makes it unusual. Both Earthbound demons (part-human characters with their various magical "knacks", and lives in the human world — including Lon), and more-bizarre beings who serve magic-users — willingly or unwillingly — as everything from guardians and messengers to assassins, are involved.

Cady has a bit of "special snowflake" going on, but it certainly doesn't make everything easy or happy for her; while later volumes will clearly involve "power creep", it doesn't seem that the author intends to take the lazy route of having her willing and able to use astounding new abilities in a snap. Lon is a much more believable love interest than most female-wish-fulfillment heroes are: he isn't a smooth talker with the perfect words and deeds, but he generally does his awkward best to show he cares, and he's a devoted father. Motor-mouth Jupe is also a more realistic thirteen-year-old than most in fiction: both lovable and a pain in the neck, neither a brat nor a miniature adult.

The time-critical investigation into the murders-by-demon that sent Cady and her parents into hiding leads through a modern Hellfire Club, and black-market sales of AEtheric artifacts and samples, into memories that have been lost or twisted, and finally to painful revelations. Meanwhile, their efforts draw Cady and Lon closer together, except when it seems the consequences will tear them apart.

it should be interesting to see how Cady's life does and doesn't change once she's no longer a fugitive unable to make deep and honest connections — assuming that those who now know what truly happened (and that those responsible are paying for their crimes), can satisfy human law enforcement somehow. I'd enjoy seeing more of Cady's pragmatic business partner, and their bar.

N.b., I don't know if the traditional enslavement of often-sentient beings is going to be more deeply questioned, but it'd be nice; even incubi and vicious creatures don't deserve to be held in this realm against their will. We haven't seen Cady doing many bindings, mainly just shaping raw "heka" or banishing imps, though memory charms ate a gray area. I wonder if we'll be seeing more of Riley Cooper.

I'm going to stop rambling now, since I've already skirted close to spoilers a couple times!

I wish I could get more of these stories cheap or from the library, but no such luck, so I don't expect to be binge-reading the series anytime soon. 😕

Arcadia Bell has been in hiding for seven years since her parents were accused of murdering three occultists and attempting to murder the head of a rival occult organization. They said it would be safer if Arcadia was separated from them. Now Arcadia, nearly 25, is a half owner of a bar that serve primarily demons. She has taught herself all sorts of magic and kept herself in hiding.

But Arcadia's parents have been spotted returning to the United States and the Luxe organization has given her two weeks to prove their innocence or turn herself in to face their punishment. She has to find the demon who was present when the killings were done to prove her parents' innocence. She turns to demon expert and photographer Lon Butler for help. He is an Earthbound demon himself who gift is empathy. He can read emotions if he's within five feet of his subject. He also has a charming 13-year-old son named Jupe who quickly wins Cady's heart.

The two of the spend time together trying to find the demon, avoid being found by the Luxe order, and solve the mystery surrounding her parents' past and her own heritage.

I liked this story which was filled with interesting characters. Cady is not the typical kickass urban heroine. She's a young woman trying to make a life for herself and learn about her powers. She has a pet pygmy hedgehog and many friends among the Earthbound despite the fact that she is a human magician.

This is the first book in a series and I'm eager to read more about Cady and Lon.
Kindling the Moon by Jenn Bennett is the first book in the Arcadia Bell urban fantasy series, which came highly recommended by one of my favorite authors, Lucy Parker. She first mentioned it when I asked for book recs similar to my all-time favorite Ilona Andrews, and it was brought up again recently. I'm still in a fantasy kind of mood and this was just 1.99usd so I gave it a try.

I enjoyed reading this overall but found some parts of it a bit slow, which can be expected since it serves as the introduction to this world. The magical system involving human magicians and demons with abilities had to be explained. I found the main characters (Cady, Lon and Jupe) interesting and I had fun getting to know them. I really enjoyed the age gap, slow burn romance. Both heroine and hero have trust issues but I liked how easy things were between them, no unneccessary drama. Plus points for the hero being a single dad. A solid urban fantasy title that I think can be read as a standalone. I was curious enough about the series to keep going. Also planning to check out the author's contemporary YA and paranormal romance titles, which I've heard good things about.
