I was blown away by the writing in this book. It's lyrical, gorgeous, and profound while still being accessible for younger readers. I read this book with my ten year old daughter, and both she and I were utterly captivated by every page. Not only is it well-written, the story has a lot heart, and the characters, and their relationships are vivid and memorable. It's a book that addresses many things —sibling relationships, sacrifice, environmental destruction— without being didactic or heavy handed. Melanie Crowder is one incredible a writer. I highly recommend A Nearer Moon.

This book was sad, but very good. There were a couple parts that made me cry.

This story has three different sides to it, those being the spirit twins and Luna.

My favorite character is Willow because she is strong even when she is sick. My favorite part is when Luna meets Gia, who the swamp people say makes them sick.
This is a lovely story about magic, community and sisterly bonds.

When Luna and her sister, Willow, jump into their boat one morning, they have no idea that Willow is going to gulp some of the cursed swamp water and sink into a sickness that everyone in the community knows only ends in death.

But Luna can't help but hope--and fight to find a cure that will save her sister.

Running parallel to Luna and Willow's tale is another one--the tale of a sprite named Perdita, whose family lived happily on the river until the humans came. When Perdita didn't make it through the magical door to a safer world with her family, she becomes isolated. Alone. Angry. Bitter.

She slips into the water and bides her time.

These two tales flow beautifully toward one another. The town, with its festivities and warm-hearted characters reminded me of The Shire. Likewise, the creature in the depths who grew uglier over time, reminded me of Gollum. I quite liked this sense of familiarity spun with a unique thread.

The voice is scrumptious, the storytelling so good it made my nose tingle.

A wonderful slim volume, bursting with heart.
At only 150 pages, this book delivered a touching story about sisterhood, grief and personal belief. This story is a prime example of what I look for and love in middle-grade books. What appears to be a simple story on the surface (pun possibly intended) soon reveals unexpected character depth and a timeline of events that kept the story feeling fresh.

It is a challenge to describe such a short book without giving away the plot. I can say, without revealing too much, that Crowder did an excellent job with the world building. While sparse, the details were key and gave me a strong mental image of the world she crafted.

Luna drives the story and though I didn’t get a solid idea of who little Willow is (aside from being bright and bubbly), Luna’s perspective provided a heartbreaking look at how it felt to have her sister’s life on the line. At such a young age, Luna deals with layers of guilt, because she feels responsible for what happened to her sister and that is compounded when their mother withdraws to the chapel and isolates Luna with her grief.

While Willow drifts away, Luna’s mother finds solace in prayer, while her grandmother watches the moon and stars and speaks of curses from her childhood. Luna scoffs at both practices, preferring to take action, even if useless, to try to cure what ails her sister. However, through the course of the book she comes to understand both perspectives and Crowder manages this without choosing sides or sounding preachy.

There’s a second storyline that runs parallel to Luna and Willow’s, but rather than say anything about it, I’ll just say I felt it strengthened the themes of family and grief.

I recommend this book to readers young and old, lovers of fairies and fans of heartwarming tales.
There was once magic in the world and sprites lived among the trees and in the river. At least that’s what people say. Now, there is only the dam and the cursed river. Anyone who drinks from the river gets the wasting sickness and has only three weeks to live. When her little sister, Willow, falls ill with this mysterious sickness, Luna sets out to save her, and finds that perhaps magic is the key. Meanwhile, underneath the river, lives a forgotten sprite named Perdita who may hold the miracle Luna seeks.

Melanie Crowder’s A Nearer Moon is an exquisite and timeless middle-grade read, full of heart, magic, fairytale elements, imagination, and a story that shines brighter than a full moon! With sparkling storytelling and charming characters, this book will captivate and enchant readers. Crowder weaves her story with that kind of lush, lyrical prose that just feels magical and glittery. Both Luna and Perdita’s worlds are vividly painted and explored. Young readers will find Luna’s village on stilts and the watery roadways to be refreshing and exciting, while Perdita’s watery wonderland is wondrous and whimsical.

Crowder does a beautiful job of intertwining Luna and Perdita’s stories of sisters, love, and hope. The characters in A Nearer Moon are full of charm, wit, courage, humor, and heart, and are irresistibly endearing.
