This is the 17th book in the series and is a historical novel, set at the time of the beginning of the Civil War. While the community is primarily in support of the war, there are some divisions. Free men of color are refused from the call up to arms, and this frustrates Abel, although his wife, Constance, is glad that he is there to support and protect his family. Anneke struggles with her husband's pacifism and is embarrassed that they may be seen as supporters of the rebels. As the men leave for war, the women work to do what they can to support the war effort, organizing everything from direct support to the troops (sewing and of course, quilting) to organizing events to raise money. They organize and direct the construction of a hall to hold events, and battle for control with city hall. Quilting plays a minor but key roles, in a quilt that goes to the battlefield and is given in an act of kindness, and a quilt raffle and pattern sale that support the quilter's fundraising. The war leads to many casualties and deaths that will profoundly affect the lives of those remaining behind.

The Union Quilters Elm Creek Quilts Jennifer Chiaverini 9780525952039 Books Reviews

I have read most of the Elm Creek books and I like most of them because of the quilting connections. This book, however, had so much detail about the war and it was distracting from the main story. I'm not a real history buff, but I do certainly appreciate the importance of those details and how the war affected the families in Pennsylvania at that time.
I am from Delaware and am well aware of the history of that period. This book was longer than many of Ms. Chiaverini's other novels and the sections concerning the war became long and drawn out. The end of the story did bring a nice conclusion and I do look forward to The Wedding Quilt which I already have. Keep writing - we love your books!
I have read all the books thus far in this series and loved all but this one, it felt like something was missing. This book seemed to focus too much on the men fighting and no enough on the women at home like her previous books did. dissapointed but I will continue to read her books in hopes that this one was just a fluke.
I always enjoy Jennifer Chiaverini's writing. I have read all of the Elm Creek Quilters series and I alwasys wish I knew hows to quilt when reading them. Maybe I'll just try some day/
I have been a fan of this author for years and am never disappointed. My favorite by far are the books set in the civil war period.
It was great historically, but very little about the family which has been the base of her other books. Previously, the family story was the main topic and they revolved around a plot; this time the family took a back seat to all the many pages of war information.
I love her books, they are easy, fast reads, but leave you hunting for that one quilt pattern that she mentions that you are not familiar with, along with its history. They leave you looking at every quilt pattern, or every design in a building, or even walking down the street with new interest.
I could not wait to get this book and it was everything I expected and more. The details of the war added facts to my growing knowledge of the way the men fought. I have read many historical Civil War stories by authors who have won awards for their research and this book was no different, except maybe more balanced between what happened on the battlefields and what happened at home.

Jennifer's characters are so well developed they become real people in your mind. Because the books are not written in chronological order didn't matter at all. I wanted to know Johanna's story and Gerta's story and Dorthea's story and Jonathan's story and the others filled in the blanks so well.

I love all Jennifer's books, but I must confess that I love historical fiction the best and she writes great historical fiction as Ann Rinaldi does. Thank you for giving us this collection of historic fiction that will live in my heart forever.
